Hope Church (formerly known as Newtown Pentecostal Church) first started from a crusade meeting in a tent organised by Pastor Howell Harris in 1948. In the early 1950s the church joined the Assemblies of God denomination and meetings were held in various venues in the town, until in 1977 a new church was built on the Dolfor Road site. This was extended in 1989, with further additions and upgrading of the foyer area in 2003.

In May 1985 Pastor Alan Hewitt, arrived from Manchester to lead the Church, serving for 33 years.

February 1997 saw Denise and Simon Curgenven leading the Youth Department.

Sensing the continued call of God, Denise then served as the Associate Pastor for 15 years.

Denise was appointed as Senior Leader in February 2017. Simon now serves Hope Church as her Associate, each of them bringing their unique gifts to the House.

For many years now, the Church’s involvement with the local community has continued to grow. Bethshan Nursing Home, Newtown Street Pastors, and Hope Day Nursery are all projects started and run by the Church.

Since its beginnings, hundreds of people have found their spiritual home at Hope and attend regularly, enabling us to provide a great range of exciting projects and activities to transform the lives of people in our community.

In July 2018 we moved back to Dolfor Road following a 4-year building project. (see separate page) Enabling us to engage with our locality and prepare for future growth with a facility fit for blessing not just Newtown but the whole of Wales.
